I’d give Herring the edge being that Kansas City gave him a full redshirt year in 2021.ĭavid Stluka/Wisconsin Athletic Communications The fifth spot feels like it’s going to be a battle between Herring and Jonathon Woodard. If Joshua Kaindoh can just stay healthy, he’ll have a chance to make some noise. It’d be nice to see Mike Danna take a big step forward in Year 3. I’d love it if they went out and added another veteran to the mix. This group still isn’t great, even after the George Karlaftis pick in the 2022 NFL draft. He was on his way to a big year last season before he got hurt. I’m hoping that Khalen Saunders can stay healthy and get some opportunity this season. There are some guys who could push for that last spot in training camp, but I’d wager that Stallworth is the guy right now.

They swapped out Jarran Reed for Stallworth. The Chiefs really didn’t do much to change up this position group this offseason.

I wouldn’t hate it if one of these undrafted free agent centers beat out Reiter for the backup job. Stick with all of the veteran depth that has been here throughout this success (Allegretti, Reiter, Wylie and Wanogho). Veach even referred to it as the team’s last “box” to tick off their draft needs. As for the other positions, it feels pretty straightforward.

Yes, the Chiefs did give an optimistic update on Niang’s status, but they also went out and drafted Kinnard. I’m going with nine offensive linemen and working under the assumption that Lucas Niang is starting the season on the PUP list. Daurice Fountain was elevated to the 53-man roster often late last year because of his ability on special teams coverage units and he seemed to be making a difference there. Coleman did both during his last NFL stop with the Giants and in college. He said that he’ll probably be OK returning kicks, but the team is going to probably need someone who can return kicks and punts. Brett Veach didn’t sound too confident about Skyy Moore’s ability to work punt returner. The post-Tyreek Hill receiver room is going to look a little bit different for Kansas City. Why isn’t Josh Gordon making the squad? Special teams. The Chiefs have brought in plenty of competition, but nothing screams that this group will be any different than it was a season ago. That said, I don’t see this going any other way until someone proves otherwise during the offseason program. I’m not convinced that Fortson will be ready to go to start the season yet, simply because the team hasn’t provided an update on him since his injury. If Gore or someone else is a big-time standout during the preseason, it’s worth noting that Ronald Jones has very little guaranteed money attached to his contract. It sounds like he’s a good pass-blocker too, which CEH and Jones are not. That 4.36s speed is something that no other back on this team has. Seventh-round picks are hardly guaranteed to make the roster, but I feel like his athleticism makes him a huge asset to this running back group. I think that Kansas City will have a better chance trying to stash Derrick Gore, Brenden Knox, Jerrion Ealy or Tavon Fleet-Davis on the practice squad as opposed to Pacheco. Undrafted free agent QB Dustin Crum is a possibility for the practice squad. Buechele seems to be on track to make the team again, short of an epic collapse in training camp and the preseason. The Chiefs would have to eat over $3 million in dead cap space to cut Henne. Short of injury, I don’t see this position group turning out any other way.

With that in mind, here are our way-too-early projections for the 53-man roster in Kansas City: The next several months will tell the tale of who makes the squad as players get prepared for 2022 during the course of the offseason training program. There’s a lot to be determined between now and when the Chiefs trim their roster down to 53 players later this summer. Obviously, rookies have yet to take a snap with the team and some haven’t even been assigned jersey numbers. The Kansas City Chiefs have wrapped up the 2022 NFL draft and are already in the process of filling out the 90-man roster with some undrafted free agents.
